Hantavirus - unknown origin

As of 11 May 2026, one additional case of hantavirus has been reported in France in a former passenger of a cruise ship linked with an outbreak. A total of nine cases (six confirmed) including three deaths associated with a cruise ship have been reported by the World Health Organization (WHO). The type of virus in this outbreak has been confirmed as Andes hantavirus. The vessel departed Ushuaia, Argentina, on 1 April 2026 and followed a route across the South Atlantic. The WHO are working closely with national authorities of all affected countries to ensure appropriate public health measures are in place. Risk to the global population is low. Please see our Topics in Brief article below for further details on hantavirus.
